#VMworld Day 1 Recap

The 2014 edition of VMworld keynote sessions started today in their traditional San Francisco locale. A packed house of over 20,000 in Moscone Center’s North Hall heard a lot of announcements from both VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and Senior Vice President Bill Fathers, who runs the newly renamed VMware public cloud offering, vCloud Air.

Pat Gelsinger and API Compatibility

The three-pronged VMware company strategy was in full bloom during their CEOs keynote, focusing on the Software Defined Datacenter (SDDC), Hybrid Cloud, and end user computing.  The latter is set to be the main subject of the Tuesday keynote and Gelsinger would later bring on Fathers to talk about Hybrid Cloud, so the bulk of the CEOs remarks were a set of rapid-fire  SDDC announcements.

Most interesting among them was a set of API compatibility features for OpenStack, Docker, and CloudFoundry, summarized by the following slide:

This definitely gives VMware an interesting set of hooks on top of its SDDC core.

Bill Fathers Talks Cloud Adoption

Fathers started his segment of the keynotes by proclaiming that hybrid cloud is the future for any serious enterprise.  He further argued, crossing the chasm style, that the cloud is going from a point of being experimental to a point where it is supporting professional deployments with an amazing acceleration over the last 9 months:

VMware’s strategy, he explained, was to provide an identical environment for both public and private cloud deployments.  While somewhat self-serving, their toolset lines up nicely with that notion.

Coming Tuesday: End-user Computing & More

Gelsinger teased the Tuesday keynotes would have a segment about end-user computing for VMware.  CTO Ben Fathi will talk about “how today’s software-defined architectures can be deployed to transform your business”.  A number of customer case studies will also highlight the morning keynote session Tuesday.
